Oxford
Beat Cambridge In 154th
University Boat Race
In
rowing, Oxford have beaten
Cambridge to win the 154th
University boat race.
In
an exciting race in which the
lead changed hands, Oxford's
strength enabled them to win
through and take the
race.
Oxford
and their cox Nick Brodie gained
revenge for last year's defeat on
the River Thames by storming to
victory over
Cambridge.
Brodie's
crew got off to a flier but,
against the odds, were pulled
back as both boats vied for
calmer waters.
Cambridge
actually pulled ahead under
Hammersmith Bridge, but it was a
brief foray at the front as
Oxford hit back.
Oxford
made the most of their weight
advantage on the choppy waters to
make it five wins out of
seven.
It
was a gruelling race in poor
conditions, with the Dark Blues
crossing the line in 20 minutes,
52 seconds - the slowest winning
time since 1947.
Cambridge
- hampered by the 11th-hour loss
of stroke Shane O'Mara on medical
grounds - came home in 21:14 for
a comprehensive
defeat.
